Natalie leapt into the media spotlight in 2005 as one of the most popular woman golfers in the United States. She distinguished herself not with victories but with swimsuit calendars and a TV show on the Golf Channel.

When Gulbis turned pro six years ago after a year at the University of Arizona — she was working toward a minor in philosophy and wanted to go to law school — she decided to keep the headcover of Wilbur the Wildcat, the UA mascot, on her driver until she won. Wilbur is still hanging around.

Natalie Gulbis, 24-year old professional golfer, has been playing full-time on the LPGA tour since 2002, when she was only 19-years of age. She also won her first tournament at only seven years of age, began breaking par by age ten, and first appeared in an LPGA event at age 14. For the young woman of Latvian descent, golf was a sport she was drawn to at a young age, playing with her dad at local courses near her hometown of Sacramento, California.

Natalie has always been well-ahead of her counterparts. She played on the men’s golf team in high school, graduated in three years, and went onto a scholarship to play golf at the University of Arizona.

Enter 21-year old Taylor Anderson, male college student at George Washington University in Washington D.C. Taylor was born paralyzed on his right side. Blessed with an unbelievable amount of courage and spirit, Anderson developed his own ways to live a “normal life.” He learned how to swing the golf club with one arm back when he was 12-years old and then started his own high school golf team at The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY, where golf had never been played before.

Now, a junior at George Washington University in Washington D.C., Anderson continues to push himself. He is an economics major, with a double minor in French and Business. When RSM McGladrey decided to sponsor the essay contest, “Who’s Behind Your Success,” Anderson decided it was time to give thanks to his mom, who helped her son by always being there for him, spending countless hours visiting doctors and going through physical therapy treatments with her son.

Gulbis was responsible for choosing a winner. She picked Anderson after reading his essay and watching the video that can be viewed below. Anderson’s incredible story behind his success and his determination to overcome all odds are why Gulbis chose him. It is also worth mentioning that Gulbis believed her father’s early influence to be the “story behind her success,” teaching her golf at such a young age. Similarly, Anderson’s role model is also a parent, which goes to show just how often the legacies of parents leave very indelible marks.
